A tern is a bird built to cover serious distance, gliding efficiently across huge stretches of open air without looking like it is working particularly hard. The Innova Tern took that concept, turned it into a distance driver, and apparently decided the rest of us were trying way too hard.

With flight numbers of 12 | 6 | -3 | 2, the Tern combines high speed, massive glide, significant turn, and a dependable finish into a distance driver built to stretch flights. It is especially useful for players who want distance-driver speed without needing the arm of a touring professional just to make the disc do something interesting.

Flight

The 12 speed gives the Tern legitimate distance-driver horsepower. It is fast enough to cover serious ground, but the understability makes that speed more accessible than many other drivers in the same class.

The 6 glide is a major part of the Tern's personality. Once it gets moving, it wants to stay airborne. That extra carry helps developing distance arms squeeze more length from their throws and gives stronger players the ability to create huge sweeping distance lines.

The -3 turn is where the Tern really opens things up. Throw it on hyzer and it can flip toward flat before riding forward. Release it flat and it can produce substantial high-speed movement. Power throwers can use that turn for long turnovers, rollers, and massive hyzer-flip distance lines.

The 2 fade gives the flight enough finish to keep things useful. It is not designed to crash violently at the end, but it has enough low-speed stability to work back after the turn when thrown with the right angle and conditions.

Best Uses

  • Maximum-distance drives
  • Long hyzer-flips
  • Huge turnover shots
  • Tailwind bombs
  • Long flexing distance lines
  • Developing arms stepping into faster drivers
  • Players who struggle to get stable 12-speeds to turn
  • Open-fairway distance shots
  • Distance rollers for stronger arms
  • Uphill drives where extra turn and glide help
  • Shots where you would like the disc to do more of the work for once

BDLD Real Talk

The Tern is for people who would like to throw far without first submitting proof that they can bench-press a refrigerator.

Yes, it is a 12-speed. But that -3 turn and 6 glide make it considerably more willing to cooperate than a lot of fast drivers.

If you have been throwing high-speed discs that immediately fade left and make you wonder why everybody keeps talking about “distance,” the Tern may finally let you see what a full distance-driver flight looks like.

For bigger arms, things get considerably more entertaining. Put the Tern on hyzer, let it stand up, watch it drift, and give the 2 fade enough room to work at the end. Done correctly, you get one of those huge S-shaped flights that makes everyone on the card briefly reconsider their own bag.

Done incorrectly, you may discover an entirely different part of the property.

That -3 turn is useful, but it is not a legally binding promise that the disc will come back. Headwinds, excessive power, bad angles, and whatever weird wrist thing you did at the last second all get a vote.

The multiple plastic options are also a big advantage. A more stable Tern can give you controlled distance with extra forgiveness. A more understable or seasoned Tern can become your tailwind bomber, turnover machine, or “there is absolutely no reasonable reason this shot should go that far” disc.

Do you need multiple Terns?

We're a disc golf store.

We are wildly unqualified to talk you out of that decision.

Bottom Line

The Innova Tern is a glide-heavy, understable 12 | 6 | -3 | 2 distance driver built for hyzer-flips, turnovers, tailwinds, and serious distance.

It gives developing arms an easier path into high-speed drivers while giving experienced players a powerful line-shaping option for maximum-distance shots.

Throw smooth. Give it room to work. And let the Tern spread its wings before you start trying to murder the disc for extra distance.
